Lesson: Articles (A, An, The), Intermediate Level
At the intermediate level, we look at how context, uniqueness, and geography decide article usage, as well as when to use No Article (Zero Article).
1. Unique Things & Superlatives
We always use THE when there is only one of something in the environment or universe.
- Unique Objects:the sun, the moon, the sky, the earth, the internet
- Superlatives:the best student, the tallest building, the most expensive car
- Ordinal Numbers:the first time, the second chapter
2. Zero Article Rule
Do NOT use an article when speaking in general about plural countable nouns or uncountable nouns.

3. Proper Nouns & Geography Quick Guide
Geographical names can be tricky. Use these systematic rules:
- Use 'THE' with:
- Plural places / Countries with groups: the USA, the Netherlands, the Philippines
- Oceans, Seas, Rivers: the Pacific Ocean, the Amazon River
- Mountain Ranges: the Alps, the Himalayas
- NO Article with:
- Individual Countries / Cities: Japan, Paris, Canada
- Single Mountains / Lakes: Mount Everest, Lake Michigan
- Continents & Streets: Asia, Oxford Street
