Comparative sentences compare two things.
  • A cat is smaller than a dog.
  • A bike is slower than a car.
  • I like apples, but bananas are sweeter.
  • Tom is better than Lily at drawing.

Superlative sentences compare more than two things.

  • An elephant is the biggest animal.
  • A rocket is the fastest way to travel.
  • Of all the toys, the doll is the prettiest.
  • Amy is the best singer.

Different adjectives form comparatives and superlatives in different ways:

How to make the forms:

Short Adjectives

adjective + -er / -est

tall → tallertallest

Exception: fun → more fun (not "funner")

Ends in Consonant + Vowel + Consonant

double last letter + -er / -est

hot → hotterhottest

big → biggerbiggest

weak → weakerweakest (no doubling)

Ends in "e"

adjective + -r / -st

safe → safersafest

Two-syllables ending in "y"

change y to i + -er / -est

happy → happierhappiest

busy → busierbusiest

Long Adjectives

more / most + adjective

expensive → more expensive → most expensive

Irregular Adjectives

These are special and change completely!

good → betterbest

bad → worseworst

far → farther/furtherfarthest/furthest
